Nathalia Ardila Rosas - Upcycled coffee ground food containers, coffee cups and lids.
Hola! My name is Nathalia and my idea consists of manufacturing biodegradable food containers, coffee cups and lids using coffee grounds waste and PLA (Polylactic Acid) which is a biomaterial that comes from corn starch or sugar cane. PLA has already been used for the making of this kind of products, nevertheless, the cost of this raw material is high compared to conventional plastics. By using coffee grounds waste from local and eventually national businesses, it would be possible to:
1. Reduce the production cost decreasing the percentage of PLA and using coffee grounds.
2. Reduce the waste of coffee that goes direct to the landfill.
3. Recycle the containers due to the biodegradable nature of the products.
The use of coffee grounds in a matrix of PLA for making a biodegradable film has been studied showing that its mechanical properties are good enough to manufacture resistant products.
